Kewpie Mayonnaise has already been around since 1925. Ever since the birth of this product, it has been well-loved and used all over Japan. It does not only go well in sandwiches, it also complements sushi, salad, mentai-ko, french fries and more other food.


Fun fact: Kewpie Mayonnaise is actually one of the standard condiment to have in every Japanese household.

The main reason is that instead of using the whole egg, Kewpie Mayonnaise consist of only egg yolks - which is why the colour of the mayonnaise is more yellowish.

Thus, protein of the egg yolks produces amino acids, which is the key to Kewpie Mayonnaise's tasty and savory flavour.


In addition to that, instead of using the usual distilled vinegar, RICE Vinegar is used in their recipe. The vinegar not only creates an enhance unique taste to the Kewpie Mayonnaise, it also acts as a naturally preservative for the product. Kewpie Mayonnaise is known to have no preservatives added; instead, vinegar and salt are used - which is also the reason why the shelf life is short.


Another fun fact:

Despite having salt as the preservative, each table spoon of Kewpie Mayonnaise consist of only 0.3 grams of sodium cloride!
